How to Wear Socks with Heels or Boots

Today we were please to see that our piece on wearing socks with heels or boots came out in the Comox Valley Record. But, in case you missed it, here are our tips:
Whether wearing pumps, spikes or platforms, some women think the only options underneath are to go with pantyhose or with nothing at all, but fashionistas tell us differently. Now it’s perfectly acceptable to show off socks as cute accessories under boots or heels.

The secret to socks and heels is getting the right socks paired with the right heels. Think texture. Find socks and shoes that have different colours and textures – you never want to be matchy-matchy. If you have a solid black shoe, try a hot pink, striped sock. If you have patterned shoes then try a solid, dark-coloured sock. And don’t forget, those socks have to be thin as it never looks good if your socks bulge out the top of your shoes.

Socks and boots are another hot trend. Some women have always enjoyed this look but it’s recently become a fashion phenomenon. And best of all, this is a look where fashion meets function. A long sock under a boot keeps you warm and dry and looks stylish too.

To pair boots with socks think about length and style. Of course, you have to invest in socks that will hit above the height of your boot. This might mean mid-calf socks for ankle boots or knee-high or even thigh-high socks for taller boots. Some socks can be slouched for a more relaxed look while others must be pulled tight to look put-together. And keep in mind, ankle-high boots tend to cut legs off and make you look shorter, so adding a short slouchy sock on top of that might add weight where you don’t want it.

To find a stylish combination think complimentary and not matching. If you have a fun, patterned sock, pair it with a simple boot without a high heel like a riding boot. If you have a smooth, simple sock feel free to pair it with adorned and heeled boots. And don’t forget fun socks with those wellies for the rainy days.

In all, consider socks a fashion accessory just like any other. Invest in colours, styles and patterns to create either a fun and flirty look or a pulled-together, sophisticated and sexy air.

Why Band-Extenders Don't Work

With a bra, fit is key. With a good fit you get lift and support and look more sleek and youthful. With bad fit you can look older, heavier and bumpy. And this fit is critical for everyone no matter their age or breast type. Everyone needs a good fit to look their best.

And while they may seem conveniet, bra extenders do not help with fit. Some women think that if their band is digging into them, or their breasts are spilling out of the cup, a band extender will solve the problem, but it just isn't so.

The thing about a bra is that it is a magnificant example of engineering. Every line, every seam, every piece of metal and plastic are all specifically designed to fit a specific shape and size. And by altering the proportions of one component of a bra, all the other components are thrown off too. They cannot compensate for a band being bigger than it should.

More often than not, all a band extender does is make the bra "float" on your breasts and this leaves you without support, lift and shape as the center of the bra no longer rests on your breastbone.

If your bra is tight on you because you've changed shape over time, remember, it's not necessarily the band that needs to change, it might be the cup and in most cases it is both. Only when getting into a new size can these changes be achieved.

So if you're uncomfortable and your bra is digging into you, we encourage you to engage us in a complimentary fitting. We always work hard to find the best fit for you.

What Does a High-Quality Bra Buy You?

Have you ever wondered why some bras cost $24.99 and some cost $99.99? It's not just because one is imported from France while other other is not, it's because of the quality. It's because of the design and features found in a $100 bra that will make you look like a million bucks.

Five Reasons to Buy a High-Quality Bra

  1. Superior fabric - microfibre bras look great and stand up to the stresses of washing and everyday wear. Not to mention microfibres breathe and wick moisture away from the body.
  2. Comfortable underwires - underwires are made of high-quality metal and then are often nylon-wrapped and encased in three layers of foam, keeping them from digging or poking.
  3. Better-quality adjusters - strap adjusters are often welded rather than stitched making them less bulky and noticeable under clothing.
  4. Better-engineered fit - fabrics are engineered to stretch or stay to provide perfect shape and lift.
  5. Exquisite designs - the look and feel of a high-quality bra is head and shoulders above anything seen in an average bra. Each bra can take hours of handcrafted time to create the work of art you see.
In all, a high-quality bra will make you look better both in and out of your clothes and even make you look like you've lost weight. Make sure and ask for a complimentary fitting to make sure that high-quality bra is the best choice for you.

Make Room for Lingerie that Loves You Back

We are pleased to have an article featured in this week's Valley Living section of the Comox Valley Record. You'll find our article, Make Room for Lingerie that Loves You Back on page eight.

An excerpt from the article:
In Feng Shui the closet represents secrets: the Manolo Blahnik fetish you’re hiding; the coat you paid way-too-much for and never wore; the muff made of real fur, even though you tell everyone it’s faux. And nowhere are there more secrets than in an underwear drawer.

We women do love to keep secrets. The two sanctuaries are the purse and the underwear drawer. No one dare go into either without an engraved invitation. Why all the secrecy around the skivvies? Well, it’s hard to say exactly, but in general, we don’t want people to know we’re living in the past...
Read the article to learn the three cardinal sins of the underwear drawer and how fixing them can make you look and feel more beautiful.

How Do I Enhance My Curves?

We all want what we don't have. Women with a larger bosom want to minimize their bustlines while our clients with subtler curves are often looking for enhancement.

Some think the only way to manage this is with the number of a plastic surgeon, but before you put silicone into your breasts we recommend trying silicone outside your breasts with Flirt's cleavage enhancers.

When women think of adding to their bustline, awful foam padding or maybe even a tissue box comes to mind. Flirt is completely different. Flirt makes a supple, silicone pad that fits in the bottom of your bra cup, pushing your breast up creating dramatic curves and cleavage.

Flirt's breast enhancers are different because they mold to your body and heat to your body temperature. They are curved and tapered to blend seamlessly with your natural lines so no one outside your lingerie drawer need know why that plunging neckline looks so great.

Bring your date night outfit or your favorite t-shirt and try a pair to see if a good Flirt works for you.

How to Prevent a Wardrobe Malfunction

We live in a fashion age where a wardrobe malfunction can make us the most memorable person in a room. And while for most people this won't involve Superbowl crowds, it might include a blouse with a little too much peek-a-boo for the boardroom.

What most women don't know is there is a secret to keeping every stitch in its perfect place - Body Tape.

Hollywood has been using Body Tape for many years. There's a reason why no strap slips or neckline gapes on the red carpet - they're taped down.

Body Tape is a Canadian made product designed to keep fabric in place. Body Tape is double-sided, hypoallergenic, medical-grade adhesive that can stick fabric-to-fabric or fabric-to-skin.

How to Use Body Tape

There are a myriad uses for Body Tape, but here are a few of our favorites.

  1. Prevent gaping on button-up blouses.
  2. Use as an instant fix for a fallen hem.
  3. Hide bra straps.
  4. Keep off-the-shoulder necklines in place.
  5. Secure wrap dresses.
Pop into Secret Drawers Lingerie to get yours. It's the perfect fashion first-aid kit to keep in your purse.

How to Save Yourself from the Dangers in Your Underwear Drawer

As I mentioned yesterday, the washing machine is a scary place for underwear. All the heat, caustic chemicals, agitation and spinning can cause some major wardrobe malfunctions. But luckily, safety is at hand.

Hand-Washing Delicates

I know, I know, many people won’t hand-wash lingerie no matter what. But just consider for a moment how much those underthings cost you. Now, if a bone worked its way out of that bra, it would be worthless. And if that bone wrapped around your washing machine’s motor, your washing machine, too, would be worthless. Hand-washing is really a household investment.

Hand-washing is simple. Just throw your delicates into some lukewarm water. Add some delicate detergent. Then go have a cup of coffee, or relax with some tea. Come back to agitate the delicates a little, rinse and you’re done. Having coffee is the longest part of the process. (Details on hand-washing here.)

Machine-Washing Delicates

But if you’re in a hurry and can’t even spare time for coffee, there is still a simple solution: a lingerie bag. A lingerie bag is just a mesh bag, normally with a zipper, into which you put your underthings. Then you throw the whole bag into the wash. That’s it! No bone is sucked out of a bra and your Hanky Panky aren’t stretched and tied into knots. (You still can’t put them in the dryer. Sorry. We can’t fix everything.)

Ask For Your Lingerie Bag In-Store

And because we care about our clients and want to save you from the aforementioned dangers, we’re happy to provide you with a lingerie bag with purchase. Simply ask for your bag while paying and you can save yourself some possibly pricey headaches.

Dangers Lurking In Your Underwear Drawer

It’s true, there aren’t just pretty underthings in silk, lace and satin lying snugly between cedar planks; there is a sinister force at work. One that could cost you hundreds of dollars.

At Secret Drawers Lingerie we always tell people to hand wash their underwear, bras, garters and fine silks and lace. This is because the spandex contained within those items breaks down more quickly under the strain of machine washing, the strong chemical detergents and in the heat of the dryer.

But the fact is, some people just don’t follow our advice. Many people throw their lingerie in with their socks and shirts and many times the lingerie comes out just fine.

Other times, it costs you hundreds of dollars.

What people don’t realize is the mechanisms in modern washing machines are extremely strong. These mechanisms can pull the bones, the stiff wire beneath each cup, right out of the bra. The machines can also grab and bunch and twist your lacy thong into an unrecognizable, inhuman shape.

But to add insult to injury, both thongs and bra boning can make its way to the motor of the washing machine. The boning or thong gets wrapped around the motor and hampers the spinning until the motor is burned out completely. This can mean a big repair bill or an even heftier replacement bill.

But don’t worry. You don’t have to fall victim to the dangers in your washer.

Next time we will outline two ways to save yourself from your underwear.

How to Find the Right Bra Style for You

At Secret Drawers Lingerie we pride ourselves on offering a wide variety of fine lingerie, but just because a bra is gorgeous doesn't mean it's the right one for you. Here's how to find the right bra style for you.

1. What is the bra for?

Different bras serve different purposes. For example, an exercise bra is designed to restrict movement in all directions so while you bounce your breasts don't. The Champion Powerback sports bra, seen right, is great for exercise.
  • Always wear a bra built for exercise when exercising or you can damage soft breast tissue with the excess movement.
  • Make sure to try different moves in the change room. For example, make sure to bend over to make sure your breasts stay in the cups and the straps don't slip.

2. What size are your breasts?

We will fit you in something beautiful but some styles are better suited to specific breast sizes.

Typically women with a larger breast will require more overall coverage in the cup than women who are smaller. This will give more support. Other things to consider with large breasts include: the number of hooks on the back (more hooks equal more support) and extra comfy straps for the extra weight. The Elixir Cassiopée (seen left) provides full cup support.

For smaller breasts, consider whether you would like a little extra padding or if you would like to wear inserts. Make sure to bring any bra inserts with you. A demi-cup in the Chantelle Africa line, seen right, can provide uplift to a smaller breast.
  • Consider a fuller cup for larger breasts.
  • A push-up bra is generally a demi-cup (half cup) and creates cleavage by pushing breasts towards the middle as seen in the Empreinte Melody, bottom right. Push-up bras are available in many sizes.
  • Some bras come with enhancing inserts built-in.

3. What are you wearing over the bra?

Some women prefer to have a seamless, smooth look when they wear a bra under thin fabric like a t-shirt. Also, some women with piercings like to make sure the jewelry doesn't show through their bra. A bra with a molded cup is often the first choice in these scenarios.
  • A molded cup may provide a small amount of padding.
  • A molded cup is generally a full-cup bra to provide a seamless look over the entire breast, like seen left in the Chantelle Africa line.
  • For lace bras, try a shirt on over the bra to see how it looks and where any seams may lay.
  • If you're buying a bra for a special occasion, make sure to bring your outfit with you.
  • Consider the neckline of your clothing, a full cup may show in v-cut shirts.
  • Wear a nude-coloured bra if you don't want the bra showing under light clothes.
  • Wear a dark bra under dark clothes to avoid discolouration.
Get the Right Bra

Remember, a bra is like a pair of jeans: it can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Choose wisely and make sure the bra fits to get the shape and support your desire. (Lejaby Envie de Cotton seen left.)

Picking the right bra shows just how much underwear matters.

Why Can't I Machine Wash My Lingerie?

Loyal readers and clients know that putting lingerie in the washing machine or, even worse, the dryer, is the biggest faux pas of them all. But some women still want to know: Why can't I machine wash my lingerie?

    The answer is simple: spandex.

Spandex is the miracle material in lingerie that allows it to stretch and snap back to its original size. Without spandex, lingerie wouldn't comfortably follow your curves the way it does today.

Spandex is actually made up of many, long polymer fibers entwined into a ball like spaghetti. When the spandex is stretched, these fibers straighten out and once released return back to their entwined shape. This ability to expand and contract repeatedly, the same way each time, is what makes it so useful in lingerie.

Spandex fibers are strong and can remain elastic in garments for years, but spandex doesn't stand up well to heat or an alkaline environment. And guess what's in your washing machine? Yes, you guessed it; your washing machine is a hot alkaline environment. This environment breaks down the spandex fibers making them shorter until eventually they become useless.

Ideally you should wash your garments by hand, in lukewarm water with a pH neutral detergent like Forever New, because once you've invested in lingerie that makes you feel beautiful and sexy, you want to keep it looking its best for a long time to come.

    * Thanks to the Hanky Panky blog for both the image and information on Spandex.

Signs You're Wearing the Wrong Bra

An unbelievable 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size, estimates Tracy M. Pfeifer, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon, and we see them all the time in our Secret Drawers Lingerie store. Women don't know what a bra should look and feel like so they don't know when they have the wrong fit. (Lejaby, left shows a good fit.)

To make matters more complicated, each manufacturer has its own version of sizing so a 36B in one brand does not equal a 36B in another; and a 36B has a smaller cup size than a 38B. Yes, it's a bit confusing, so the best thing to do is to ignore the numbers and just look for the best fit no matter what the number or letter may be.

Tips You're Wearing the Wrong Bra

    1. If your band or straps are leaving marks on you, you're in the wrong size. Correctly fitting bras are comfortable, do not rub, and certainly don't leave red marks or indentations on your body.

    2. Look at the fit not only from the front, but also from the side. Your breast should not spill over the top of the bra. You might think this looks good until you notice bumps under your t-shirt when looking from the side. If you're looking for va-va-va-voom cleavage, you can get it without wearing the wrong size.

    3. The center of the bra and the bottom underwire should be flush against your body. If you see a gap, you run the risk of "uniboob". You can definitely find a better fit.

The fit on this Lejaby model, right, could be better. The center of the bra doesn't rest against her breast bone and she's spilling out of the cups.

    4. If the cups pucker or wrinkle you're probably in a cup that's too big. The right size cup fits like a glove - your breast fills it completely without spilling over the top.

    5. The back band of a bra should not ride up your back. When you look at your bra from the side there should be a line from the fullest part of your cup to your band that is parallel to the ground.

    The Most Important Bra-fitting Tip

If your bra doesn't make you look and feel amazing, it's the wrong one for you. The best way to get a great fit is to visit a specialty shop like ours for a professional fitting. We will guide you through the numbers and letters to the one that works for you.

We'll be providing more bra buying tips in the future, but remember the right bra can make you look smooth, uplifted and even younger, while a bad fit can do the opposite. Bra fit matters.

    Bridal Lingerie

At Secret Drawers Lingerie, we're honored to work with brides for their special day. Women of all ages come in wanting something special, so they can look their very best as all eyes in the room fall to them as they walk down the aisle.

Unfortunately, what most brides don't realize is looking great on their wedding day isn't the same thing as looking amazing on their wedding night. Most women would be quite happy to reveal the Va Bien bustier, seen right, on their wedding night, but while beautiful on its own, that might not be the best thing for underneath your wedding dress proper.

The gorgeous plunging neckline, lace and ruffles of the piece look great against skin, but may appear bumpy under fabric. A piece like this often doesn't give a woman the lift and support she needs under a strapless dress either.

    Advice to Brides

Our advice, of course, is more lingerie!

Brides are much happier if they focus on two looks: one for the wedding day, and one for the wedding night.

    Wedding Day Lingerie

For under the dress, brides should look for well-fitting, supportive lingerie. We recommend a bra-fitting to ensure the perfect fit, keeping in mind that fit in a strapless bra is the key to keeping it, and you, in place. Secret Drawers Lingerie is pleased to provide complimentary professional fittings, but they can be found in other specialty shops too.

In addition to the bra, a product like one from our Sveltesse line, seen left, is ideal. This line of body shapers is the best we've ever seen in smoothing out any body imperfections while invisible under clothes. The model shown left extends from the ribcage, down to the thighs, with not a bump or line in sight. The specially-designed bands around the ribcage and thigh hold them neatly in place so you won't be seen tugging and adjusting uncomfortable underwear on your wedding day. In nude, it's the perfect item for under a tight-fitting dress - and no one will know you have it on!

    Wedding Night Lingerie

Once your day look is under control, you can be as naughty, or as nice, as you please at night. The Va Bien bustier, above, is perfectly sinful in black, paired with long silk gloves and stiletto heels. Or, if you prefer, the Hanky Panky dotted tuille thong and garter set, seen right, paired with a lace cami and your bright smile is cute and flirty.

Two looks can keep everything smooth on the wedding day and steamy on the wedding night; because. on this special day, certainly, underwear matters.

How to Care for Your Lingerie

After discussing the beauty and romance of white underthings, we thought it would be a great time to share our tips on keeping your luxurious lingerie looking it's best.

    1. Save your white lingerie for wear under light-colored clothing. If you wear it under dark-colored clothes, those dark colors can rub off making your whites less than pristine.

    2. Always wash your whites with other light colors. Dye can come off in the wash, making your whites look dingy.

    3. Always hand-wash your lingerie in lukewarm water. You've invested in your beauty and comfort and hand-washing your underthings every two-to-three wearings will keep them looking their best and prolong their life. It also helps keep stretch fabrics fitting you well, and not becoming stretched out.

    4. Our favorite detergent is Forever New. You can pick this up at Secret Drawers Lingerie or order it online, if you can't drop by in person. This product is great because it has been designed to be delicate and will not harm the exquisite fabrics found in our lingerie. It also has a lovely scent. If you find yourself without this product, a gentle shampoo can be used in a pinch.

    5. If you've found your lingerie stained or discolored, dissolve some detergent in the sink, and let your items soak overnight. Especially with Forever New, it's amazing what will come out using this method.

    6. Rinse out lingerie well; leaving soap in your lingerie can harm fabric. Roll your lingerie up in a towel to remove excess water. Don't twist or wring out the garments. Then lay flat to dry.

    7. If you must use a washing machine, a front-loading model is more gentle than a top-loading one. Always put items into a mesh bag, and of course, use the gentle cycle.

    8. Never - ever - put lingerie in the dryer! It is the sin among sins in the lingerie world.

If you follow these tips your luxurious garments are here to stay, which is important, because underwear matters.

Wearing White Lingerie (before Memorial day)

Memorial Day is coming up and while for some this means picnics and fireworks, for us at Secret Drawers Lingerie, it means the official emergence* of white lingerie. Just in case you're not a Miss Mannors follower and want to get into your whites early, we thought we'd provide a few tips on wearing white lingerie.

    Who wears white?

Lots of people, actually. White is now officially considered a "color" and not a neutral, so many designers use it to make a fashion statement. White lingerie runs the gamut from traditional panties, like those many of us grew up with, to the devastatingly sexy bra and rio brief set in the Menton line by Prima Donna, seen left.

    Isn't white just for brides?

White certainly is a bridal favorite, but we get requests for it from many. Peeling away layers of clothing only to reveal the sweet innocence of white underpinnings is seen as very romantic for many.

So, are there any rules for wearing white?

Well, at Secret Drawers Lingerie we don't believe in rules, but if you'd like a couple of suggestions:
    1. White lingerie will show under light-colored clothes. If you're looking to keep things hidden, try a color that's close to your skin tone. Of course, we believe it's perfectly acceptable to show off exquisite lingerie, but we'll leave that up to you.
    2. If you are choosing white for bridal, try a molded cup with a skinny strap like the Twist line by Prima Donna, seen right. The smooth cups will give your breasts the boost you want under your dress with straps that are easy to hide.
    3. While you should always look for a good fit, for whites it's particularly important not to have too tight a fit. White can show lumps and bumps more easily than other colors.
    4. White looks particularly stunning on people with a darker skin-tone. If you're naturally light-skinned, try some self-tanner.
Just remember, whites are no longer just boring, everyday wear, or to be saved for a wedding day. Whites now come with every purpose in mind from nice to naughty, so indulge in a new crisp, clean piece this summer.

    * And yes, of course we carry white lingerie year-round. Beautiful accoutrements simply cannot be dictated by the calendar.
